Movie Review: Lee Daniels' The Butler

But she has an awards-show moment when she's applying lipstick and drunkenly challenging her husband about how he divides his time and loyalties. The casting is both an embarrassment of riches and occasional case of stunt hiring gone awry as with Mariah Carey as young Cecil's mother, Robin Williams as President Eisenhower and Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan. Even with brown contacts, a red dress and brown hair, she's too tall and too Jane Fonda. When it comes to the presidents, Liev Schreiber as LBJ and Alan Rickman as President Reagan are the best, and John Cusack as Richard Nixon the worst. James Marsden supplies the hair, accent, empathy and warmth to JFK. David Oyelowo brings pain and passion to the role of Louis while Terrence Howard turns up as the neighborhood lothario and Cuba Gooding Jr.
Source:

Keri Russell is Jane (get it?), a plain-Jane (yes, we get it ...) who blows her life savings on a trip to a Disney-like mini-theme park populated by the types of characters in Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Sense & Sensibility. Janes luck with gauche modern guys is nil. She Kim Kardashian pregnant pines for a real-life Darcy, obsessed as she is with Colin Firths 1995 turn in the BBC production of P&P. Movie poster artist Drew Struzan gets the doc treatment

Well,"Lee Daniels' The Butler"isn't great. It has many issues, but do not discount this movie for its missteps. The story follows Cecil Gaines from his childhood in the cotton fields to his tenure as butler in the White House. The character is very loosely based on the gentleman Eugene Allen, who served under eight presidents. There are times where the stories coincide, but for the most part, the script uses Gaines' story to construct a family history that spans the civil rights movement and changes in the lives of blacks in the U.S. It has been negatively referred to as "The Black Forrest Gump," which is partly unfair, because at the heart it focuses on family. Cecil and his son are juxtaposed to show the difference between working for change from outside or inside the system.
Source:

Movie Review: Forest Whitaker a Witness to History in ‘The Butler’

Judging by the reviews for Jobs, there still may be plenty of room for another film treatment. As of Friday morning, Jobs is carrying a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 26% meaning about three quarters of the reviewers tabulated have given the flick a Thumbs Down. The RT rating among so-called top critics was even lower at 20%. The movie also didnt fare well with the affable Steve Wozniak, who was portrayed in the film by Josh Gad of The Book of Mormon fame. In a blog posting on Gizmodo , Wozniak called the acting good and said he was attentive and entertained but not greatly enough to recommend the movie. And he denied the claim that hes criticizing this movie because he is serving as a paid consultant on the Steve Jobs project. I felt bad for many people I know well who were portrayed wrongly in their interactions with Jobs and the company.
Source:

Becoming Steve Jobs: Ashton Kutcher on his movie transformation

"He studied the guy; he lived in his skin every day, which wasn't the easiest place to live, and I really respect him quite a bit. He gave everything he had, and more than anything I knew that this role was important to him. And when something's important to you no matter what you do, you're going to give it everything you have." Despite those efforts, "jOBS" has faced criticism ahead of its release date, from Kutcher's casting on down. The biopic was originally slated to bow in April, but was bumped back to August reportedly so the studio could have a longer marketing push. Reviews, thus far, have been mixed, and then there are those questioning its timing. Kutcher says that when he received the script, which was already a work in progress when Jobs died, that he did have that "immediate concern." "I know that there were some people that were close to him who didn't want a movie to be made this soon," he said, but because "I have friends that actually know him, I felt ...
Source:

TV Star Giudice’s Alleged Fraud Symbolic of Mortgage Boom

The couples alleged fraud occurred at a time when lenders were more lenient throughout the loan process, explained Erin Lantz, director of mortgages at Zillow. Back in the boom years, there were a fair number of banks that didnt require documentation to include in your application, Lantz said. Its possible in those years she was applying for a no- or low-documentation type of loan, or the processes in the underwriter group were more lenient. These sort of low-documentation loans or no-income, no-asset loans coined ninja loans by one lender are no longer common. Which begs the question: Would anyone be able to get away with the same sort of fraud today, or was the couples alleged scheme indicative of the pre-2008 housing boom? Applicants still may be able to lie on documents, but the chance of getting caught is much higher, Lantz said. Because of the way lender processes have changed, the likelihood of getting away with mortgage fraud or getting a mortgage approved with faulty information is much lower, she explained.
Source:

Samsung Unveils Sexy Curved OLED TV for $8,999

The KN55S9C should also provide a stiff challenge to the superb 3D images achievable by passive-equipped 4K TVs. The early OLED world is curved Both Samsung and LG elected to skip the flat-panel OLED sets available in Korea -- and touted for years at electronics shows like CES -- and come out with curved screens first in the U.S. Why curved? LG spokesman Ken Hong told CNET the decision had to do with differentiating OLED sets from other TVs like flat-panel LED LCD and plasma. He noted that at the early pricing -- which is pretty steep, no matter if the display is curved or not -- the selling point for the TV has to be about more than just the hardware. A spec sheet (PDF) for Samsung's set published by retailer Value Electronics goes into some of the supposed benefits of the slightly inward-curved (concave) screen, saying, "Viewers will enjoy a more natural match to our peripheral angle of view." The store is well-known in the enthusiast community for hosting an annual flat-panel TV shootout , so the sheet is also careful to specify an ideal seating distance to take advantage of the curve: a range between 6 and 10 feet from the screen.
Source:

Your Favorite Celebrities' Favorite Burgers and Pizza

Celebrities give us insight on how to dress, what workout we should be doing, enlighten us with wisdom on current events and, of course, they're also always willing to give us their opinion on haute cuisine. Hollywood mogul won't face charges in Dorner helicopter spat

But his camp has argued that the criminal investigation launched by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was politically motivated. "We're pleased that the district attorney's office reached the obvious conclusion for the second time, said Relativity spokesman David Shane, referring to the fact that prosecutors had declined to file charges in connection with the incident once before. It's shameful that the sheriff wasted precious taxpayer time and money to fuel his political agenda." Kavanaugh's defenders have said the criminal investigation was political payback by Sheriff Lee Baca because Kavanaugh is supporting another potential candidate for sheriff in next year's election: Baca's outgoing top aide Paul Tanaka. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said the probe never was politically motivated. The sheriff, he said, didnt even know about this until long after the report was filed. Kavanaugh, a sheriffs volunteer, was landing at a sheriff's helipad for an appointment with Tanaka. Around that time, the hunt for Dorner, an accused killer, was beginning, but according to a source close to Kavanaugh, the studio head did not know about it until he was taking off and leaving.
